This page is about exchanging documents between Notebooks and your computer quickly and easily. This is different from synchronization, which is covered in an extra section.

Share Books and Documents over a WiFi Network

With sharing active, Notebooks turns into kind of a hard drive (a WebDAV server, to be exact) that can be accessed from any computer on the same network. This is probably the easiest and most efficient way of getting documents into and out of Notebooks.

Sharing allows you to:

  1. -drag&drop documents between your computer and Notebooks

  2. -open documents from and save them to Notebooks directly from your computer

  3. -synchronize Notebooks between different devices (iPhone and iPad, for example)

To connect to Notebooks from your computer, a network connection between your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad and your computer as well as a WebDAV compliant operating system or application (for example Mac OS Finder, Windows Web Folders or Network Places, Cyberduck, Transmit, etc.) are required.

To start sharing, please follow these steps:

  1. -Make sure that your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad has an active WiFi connection to the same network your computer is connected to.

  2. -Make sure you have enabled WiFi Sharing in Notebooks' settings.

  3. -Open the book that you want to share and select Share This Book from the context menu. Notebooks will display all details necessary for connecting (http://...).

  4. -Unless already done, Notebooks will ask you to set a username and password of your choice; you will have to enter these when making a connection from your computer.

  5. -Using the Mac OS Finder’s “Connect to Server”, Windows’ “Network Drive” or your favorite WebDAV client like Cyberduck, Transmit, NetDrive etc. connect to Notebooks.

  6. -You can now access Notebooks' documents like a folder on your hard drive. Depending on the type of client you are using, you can also up- and download folder structures and open/edit documents by double-clicking on them.

Import and Export with SyncDocs

This second option use Apple’s Bonjour technology and uses SyncDocs, a freely available web server for your computer. Before you start using this options, please download and install SyncDocs. You find details in the SyncDocs section.

Import Documents from your Computer

  1. -Please make sure that the documents you are about to import have valid file extensions (see below for a list of supported formats).

  2. -On your computer launch SyncDocs and drop the documents you want to import into SyncDocs’ window.

  3. -Make sure you have enabled SyncDocs in Notebooks’ settings.

  4. -In Notebooks tap the + button and select Import.

  5. -From the list of presented services select your SyncDocs service.

Notebooks imports the documents you put into SyncDocs window and stores them in the current book, but does not overwrite documents with older versions.

Export Notes to your Computer

  1. -On your computer launch SyncDocs.

  2. -Make sure you have enabled SyncDocs in Notebooks’ settings.

  3. -In Notebooks select any of the Export actions which are available through the Action buttons.

  4. -From the list of presented services select SyncDocs.

  5. -Notebooks transfers the selected note or the contents of the selected book to your computer.

  6. -Your find the exported documents or hierarchy of books on your computer in the SyncDocs download folder (you quickly reach them by clicking Show Downloads in SyncDocs).

Exporting is a quickly and easy way of creating a backup on your computer. Please keep in mind: export replaces the documents on your computer. If you do not want that you should synchronize instead.
