Working with Notes


  1. -Swipe left to right (or vice versa) across notes to move to the next or previous document.

  2. -Swipe up and down along the text to scroll.

  3. -Tap somewhere within the note to bring up the keyboard and start editing. If you have clickable links enabled, please tap twice.

  4. -Rotate your iPhone or iPad and switch to landscape mode.

  5. -The info bar close to the top of the page displays details about the current note: date and time of the latest modification and the sequence number within the book according to the selected sort order. It also indicates if the note is currently editable or not.
    Tap the info bar to go to fullscreen mode, which hides header and footer. Tap the status bar again to bring them back.
    Touch and hold the info bar to hide all interface elements and enjoy a distraction-free environment for reading and writing. Tap the top edge of the screen (you’ll notice a light shadow) to show the header again.

  6. -Tap the Jump button at the top right to quickly move to a different book. This is the same function as in book view.

  7. -The Add button creates a new empty note.



Edit Notes


  1. -Tap somewhere within a text note to bring up the keyboard and start editing.
    (If you have Clickable Links enabled in settings you need to tap twice to bring up the keyboard)


  1. -Shake your iPhone or iPod touch while the keyboard is visible to Undo your latest changes.
    On the iPad, just use the Undo key on the keyboard.


Unless disabled in Notebooks’ settings, a series of extra keyboard buttons appears on top of the keyboard that allow you to add text formats (Markdown), insert specific information (links, images, time stamp or current locations) or hide the keyboard on the iPhone. Also part of the selection are two buttons for cursor movement: tap them to move the cursor a word forward or back, touch & hold them to move to the beginning or end of the current paragraph.



The Note’s Toolbar


Most icons in the toolbar should be familiar if you have used the Mail app.


  1. BulletTap the Info button to reveal information about the current note: its title, which you can changed, creation and modification dates, word and character count for plain text notes, file size, pixel dimensions, URL of the source the document was imported form etc.
    With protection you can turn on protection for this note.
    For text notes you can change font and background pattern or set the note to read only.
    With Contexts enabled, you can set context tags for the note.
    When in a task list, you can also set a task’s due date from the info view.



  1. BulletTap the Move button to bring up a list of all available books that you could move the current note to.


  1. BulletTap the Delete button to delete the current note.
    CAUTION: THERE IS NO TRASH CAN - DELETING A NOTE IS FINAL!


  1. BulletTap the Action button  to bring up a menu of actions. Depending on the type of document you are looking at, the menu may vary. The most important options are:


  1. -Revert to previous version lets you undo all recent changes.

  2. -Convert to Task List: available for plain text notes only, this option creates a new task list with the title of the note and moves this note onto the list. This is a convenient shortcut if you have collected a series of tasks in a single note and want to convert that to a task list.

  3. -Split to tasks converts the note to tasks, but leaved the tasks in the current list.

  4. -Task from Selection: creates a new task with the currently selected text as title. This option is available for plain text notes that are stored in a task list, when you have text selected.

  5. -Unzip, available for zip archives only, extracts the contents.

  6. -Duplicate: creates an exact copy of the note, which may be handy for templates, or if you just want to have several versions of a note.

  7. -Copy as Plain Text: HTML documents, this option copies the note and strips off all formatting. Can be handy if you want to revert a list to a normal text note.

  8. -Copy Link: this copies the link or URL of the current note to the pasteboard (works for books as well). You can then paste the link into a different note in Notebooks or in another application on your iPhone or iPad. If the application supports it, the link will be tappable and open the original document in Notebooks.
    This also works within Notebooks and lets you create index documents or cross-references.

  9. -Send by Mail: send all types of documents without leaving Notebooks.
