Synchronization

Use Synchronization to keep the contents of Notebooks synchronized with a folder on your computer or on a WebDAV enabled server. All changes, no matter whether you make them in Notebooks or on your computer or server, respectively, will be copied to the "other side" during the next synchronization.

Notebooks supports two methods for synchronization, which can be turned on and off in settings: Bonjour (SyncDocs) and WebDAV.

Sync with a WebDAV Server

  1. -Make sure you have set up and enabled WebDAV synchronization in settings. You find more details in the WebDAV section of this website.

  2. -In Notebooks go to the book you want to sync and tap on its title in the Navigation Bar.

  3. -From the list of options that appears select Sync - WebDAV (Notebooks will display the description you have entered in WebDAV settings)

  4. -The “sync folder”, which is the folder that reflects the contents of Notebooks on your WebDAV server, is located in the directory that is specified in WebDAV settings.

Sync with Bonjour

  1. -This requires the installation of SyncDocs. Details are available in the SyncDocs section.

  2. -Make sure you have enabled SyncDocs in Notebooks’ settings

  3. -On your computer, launch SyncDocs.

  4. -In Notebooks, go to the book you want to sync and tap on its title in the Navigation Bar.

  5. -From the list of options that appears select Sync - SyncDocs.

  6. -From the list of available services select SyncDocs.

  7. -The “sync folder”, which is the folder that reflects the contents of Notebooks on your computer, is located in SyncDocs’ download folder.

In either case, all new or modified visible books and notes within the books you selected will be exported and all new or modified folders and documents from your sync folder will be imported into Notebooks.

How does Synchronization support You?

  1. -It is a simple way of getting information into and out of Notebooks.

  2. -Save your texts and web archives, print PDF documents or export documents from a database directly into the sync folder, and have everything available in Notebooks after the next synchronization.

  3. -Quickly and reliably transfer your notes from Notebooks to your sync folder and proceed with your work on the computer. When you leave your desk, transfer the changes back into Notebooks and seamlessly resume your writing while on the way.

  4. -You have a single effortless way to back up everything in Notebooks.

  5. -You can easily exchange the contents of Notebooks by making a backup and then loading new contents into Notebooks. If you want to go back to the previous version, just reverse the process.

These are only a few examples of how synchronization largely enhances the usability of Notebooks on your iPhone or iPad.

A few important Hints

  1. -Notebooks only synchronizes documents that have been added or changed since the last sync.

  2. -When you have changed the same note in both places, Notebooks detects a conflict and asks you to delete one version in order to keep consistent. Details will be documented for you in an extra note in Notebooks.

  3. -SyncDocs only: Notebooks does not detect when you delete a note in one place only, so it will bring that note back in the next run
(Since Notebooks 3.1, WebDAV correctly synchronizes moved and deleted objects, too)

  4. -Please avoid the characters /|\:*?”<>&+ in the title of books and notes, as they may cause problems. These are illegal characters on the Windows (Macs are a bit more generous here)

  5. -You can sync single books as well. Just navigate to the book you want to sync, tap the title to bring up the list of actions and select Synchronize. This will restrict the scope of the synchronization to that book and its contents.

  6. -Protected notes are synchronized only when Notebooks is unlocked!

  7. -There are more remarks about sync via WebDAV on the WebDAV section.
