Setup and Using WebDAV Services

Notebooks can synchronize its notes and books with web-based servers, so called WebDAV services.

A WebDAV server basically is a web server that can be mounted on your computer just like a folder or drive. Perfectly integrated into your Windows file-system or your Mac Finder, it provides a convenient way of storing your documents off-site.

Without extra software or changing your firewall, you can open documents from and save them to that WebDAV server just as you would on your local disk. Notebooks can read from and write to the same directory and uses this capability for synchronization.

Examples of WebDAV enabled services are MobileMe, myDrive, SwissDisk, myDisk, GMX Mediacenter, 1&1 Smartdrivefastmail.fm, interWaysMAIL, just to name a few. Many services offer free accounts with storage of 2GB or more. For more details, please visit the service providers’ websites or take a look at the Notebooks handbook, available in the Download Area.
Of course you can also set up your own WebDAV server on your computer or network.

Advantages of Using WebDAV

  1. -No need to download and install extra software

  2. -No need to change firewall settings

  3. -The connection is secure, if the WebDAV server supports https

  4. -Notebooks can synchronize with the server whenever an internet connection is active, so there is no need to be close to a computer.

  5. -Documents can easily be added and modified on the computer, opened from and saved to your WebDAV server

  6. -Synchronization with WebDAV correctly synchronizes moved and deleted objects, too (this is something SyncDocs cannot do).

  7. -You could even use that for collaboration, with someone "at home" putting new documents on the server that you receive the next time you sync Notebooks.

How to Set Up WebDAV in Notebooks

  1. -Before you can start you need access to a WebDAV enabled service.

  1. -In Notebooks’ Settings, turn on Sync to WebDAV and tap on Change WebDAV Settings

  1. -MobileMe users only need to fill in their username without @me.com and password, and can optionally enter a start directory for Notebooks (the default is Documents). If a start directory is given, it must already exist on your iDisk.

  1. -All others, choose a Description for your service

  2. -Enter the server address as given by your service provider (please refer to their websites or take a look at the Notebooks handbook)

  3. -Optionally, give a start directory for Notebooks. The default is the root directory, but if a start directory is given, please make sure it is created on the server before you start to sync.

  4. -Enter your username and password

  5. -If you want Notebooks to synchronize moved and deleted objects, too, just turn ON the switch Sync Deletes. The first time you sync after turning the switch ON, Notebooks collects all necessary information, and from the second time on Notebooks will move and delete during synchronization.

You will now be able to synchronize all or part of your documents in Notebooks to the server you have specified. In any book, tap in its title in the navigation bar and select “Sync-YourService” from the context menu.

Important Remarks

  1. -Please do not use WebDAV Sync as your only backup solution for Notebooks and make regular backups through iTunes as well.

  2. -If you find that your WebDAV service does not integrate with Notebooks, please let us know.

  3. -Because your documents are transferred across the internet, synchronization via WebDAV takes more time than via SyncDocs. This is influenced by the bandwidth of your internet connection, and your WebDAV service may impose restrictions as well.

  4. -Large files like PDF documents take longer to transfer than text documents!

  5. -We do not control the type of documents you sync via WebDAV, so you can import “unsupported” formats. Notebooks will try to display any file, but you will receive an warning when it is unable to.

  6. -If you experience any undesired behavior, please let us know.  Thank You.
